Patient of the Month

December, 1999

Phyllis Allen

Patient of the MonthPhyllis Allen is our Patient of the Month for December 1999. She came to our office in May 1991. Her cardiac problems date to 1978, when she underwent her first of many angiograms. She ultimately required a five vessel coronary bypass. In addition to her coronary artery disease, Mrs. Allen has diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension. She was recently diagnosed with renal artery stenosis, a condition that prevents normal blood flow to the kidneys, resulting in high blood pressure. Her condition was corrected with placement of a stent into the renal artery.

She has diligently complied with her medical regimen and has remained a positive, cheerful, and outgoing person. We commend her on her efforts and congratulate her as December's Patient of the Month! Here is her story in her own words:

"I was first aware of my cardiac problems approximately 30 years ago. In 1980 I began to carry nitroglycerin at all times. Actually I was not too surprised as both my father and mother had died from cardiac problems. For about ten years I had a series of angiograms and two coronary angioplasties. Dr. Joseph Schneider, my family doctor, recommended that I go to see Dr. Pond.

I do find it difficult to keep on my diet. After being warned, I developed diabetes. I became doubly conscious of the importance of weight control and exercise. Having severe spinal stenosis has made exercise quite difficult and limited. I have been an avid swimmer and diver and love water exercise. Following my heart surgery, the wonderful "miracle workers" at the cardiac rehab program were so very helpful. For several years I followed their recommendations regarding exercise. With the complication of my spinal stenosis I gave up the walking regimen but continue doing stretching exercises each day.

I am fortunate to have the great support of my family and my friends. My husband, who died three years ago, was helpful as he had cardiac problems too. Dr. Pond and Jane Magro have been so very helpful. I do enjoy travel, painting, and reading. My advice to others is "follow your doctor's advice and stay happy!"
