Patient of the Month

April, 2000

Boyd Rose

Patient of the Month Boyd is a 78 year old gentleman who developed angina in 1981, and underwent successful four vessel coronary artery bypass surgery. He had a history of hypertension and hyperlipidemia. Subsequent to his surgery, he participated in cardiac rehab therapy, and was a dedicated participant. He developed a stringent cardiovascular exercise program, reduced fat consumption in his diet, lost weight, and took other steps to reduce his future cardiac risk. He participated in a number of 5k and 10k runs, retired from work, and has been a model for others with heart disease.

After 18 uneventful years, he developed angina again, which lead to another angiogram and a second bypass operation in 1999. A five vessel revascularization procedure was done. Once again he demonstrated his determination and commitment to good health, and resumed his exercise and diet program promptly after the second surgery. He had a rapid recovery.

Boyd has several pertinent observations about his approach to living with cardiovascular disease. In his own words, "Lifestyle changes are most important for a good quality life after (heart) surgery, and it is not as difficult as I first imagined. The changes I made became routine in time, and I adjusted to a revised diet and exercise regime…My wife, Phyllis, joined in on the changes from the start, and we claim many important benefits now, including weight reduction and simpler meal plans."

"I have enjoyed the support of my family and others in adhering to life style changes…and (physicians and nurses) have provided great care through cardiac rehabilitation and beyond. The rehab nurses are very dedicated, and share their knowledge and information. I benefited from every exercise session and continue to adhere to their recommendations at home. I have even built a gym in the corner of our garden room."

"Retirement has helped to reduce stress. I enjoy a combination of exercise, gardening, golf, and reading, and I am making progress in rebuilding muscle loss."

"So much information is available now about the risk factors for coronary artery disease. I recommend that everyone become familiar with a good diet and exercise program, and have periodic checkups."

Riverside Cardiology Associates is pleased to honor Boyd as the Patient of the Month for his diligent diet and exercise program over the years. His commitment to good health undoubtedly has staved off problems with his heart condition and has made his life more fulfilling.
